No fact of the matter

چکیده
Theodore Sider has argued that while there are some philosophical debates about which is no fact of the matter, in normative ethics likely not among them. This essay investigates a possible counterexample: debate so-called dirty hands. The first surveys several cases where No-Fact-of-the-Matter (NFM) claims have been made. Taking its cue from these cases, it then outlines two strategies factualists domain can take, as well non-factualist counter strategies. Next, shows how an NFM claim be defended for Finally, argues this at least as, if more, plausible other instances

On What it Takes for There to Be No Fact of the Matter
Philosophers are very fond of making non-factualist claims—claims to the effect that there is no fact of the matter as to whether something is the case. But can these claims be coherently stated in the context of classical logic? Some care is needed here, we argue, otherwise one ends up denying a tautology or embracing a contradiction. In the end, we think there are only two strategies availabl...

Does the Universe in Fact Contain Almost No Information ?
At rst sight, an accurate description of the state of the universe appears to require a mind-bogglingly large and perhaps even in nite amount of information, even if we restrict our attention to a small subsystem such as a rabbit. In this paper, it is suggested that most of this information is merely apparent, as seen from our subjective viewpoints, and that the algorithmic information content ...

A COUGHING MAN Last year an upper respiratory tract illness swept through our household, hitting first my youngest son, then his older brother, and finally me. Only my wife was spared. We coughed for days and days. Still, we trudged on, my sons going off to school and I to work in the hospital. My wife, the only one in our family not burdened with a Y chromosome, looked at us one night at the d...
متن کاملHypothetical revision and matter-of-fact supp osition
The recent literature offers several models of the notion of matter-of-fact supposition 1 revealed in the acceptance of the so-called indicative conditionals. Some of those models are qualitative (Collins 1990), (Levi 1996), (Stalnaker 1984). Other probabilistic models appeal either to infinitesimal probability or two place probability functions ((van Fraassen 1995), (Joyce 1999), (McGee 1994))...
